Fighting dogs’ bodies discovered

More dead dogs, thought to have been used in dog fighting, have been found dumped on canal banks in the West Midlands, the RSPCA has said.

The charity is highlighting the issue following the discovery of another body, covered in injuries, by a canal in Aston, Birmingham, on Monday.

Two more dead dogs with fight injuries were found in Smethwick in July.

Ch Insp Ian Briggs said dog fighting was becoming more prevalent and such incidents were becoming more common.

The latest body was discovered by a member of the public, who said the dog’s body appeared to have been put in a crate, but by the time the RSPCA arrived at the scene the body had disappeared.

“It may be that someone removed it, we don’t know,” he said.

He said that all three bodies found during the summer were bull-terrier types.

“We often get incidents of dogs dead and dumped in public areas and now, in some instances, the dogs appear to have been used in a fight,” he said.

“It’s an on-going situation.”

Ch Insp Briggs has been with the RSPCA for 16 years but said he was still amazed at why people got involved with dog-fighting.

“It’s barbaric. The mind boggles as to why people do it.

“It has no place in today’s society but there seems to be a continuous attraction to it.”

On Tuesday, three people were convicted of dog-fighting offences following a BBC investigation.
