Who’s The Boss – You Or The Dog?

Posted by admin on September 7th, 2009

Many people get defensive when I ask the question: ‘who is the boss – you are the dog?’

It is important to remember that dogs are basically pack animals and they have a need for the pack, it makes them feel sae and comfortable.

Almost all dogs are assertive and if allowed to will try to assume the leadership of the pack and you and your family are the pack to which they belong. If you are not careful and permit them directly or indirectly then they will try to assume the leadership of the pack. Never, repeat never, allow your dog to do this.

It will be no problem for your dog to become subordinate to you providing that you gently, but firmly make it understand that you are leader of the pack and make it understand what you want.

We’ve all done it at times ie allow our pups to develop bad habits for they seem funny and cute at the time but believe me allowing your dog to develop these habits will come back to haunt you.

Owning a dog for some adults is a lifestyle similar in may respects to having children4. If you are new to dogs, ensure you give your puppy and yourself the opportunity to get the most out of your partnership.

Provide the correct environment, company and control, and diet, allow plenty of rest time, establish consistent routine, assert gentle dominance, and begin basic training. Take your puppy to a reputable puppy pre-school or dog training club, stay interested in him/her and you’ll enjoy an enriched lifestyle.
