Prevent Your Dog From Scent Marking

“Hey, I’m Here, Smell My Scent!” It’s what all dogs do – it’s just the way it is! And for a dog there is no better way they like to communicate to the world and announce than leaving a scent, so lets discuss a few tips to prevent your dog from scent marking.

It may be normal but for us humuns it is quite annoying. Not only do you have to watch that your house doesn’t get soaked from your dogs urine odor but if they decide to leave a marker in the wrong place it can cost a lot of money on ruined stuff. One day my sister came home to discover that the dog had made his way into her bedroom and left his mark on the dress she had left out for an interview the following afternoon! Why did it do it will it was brand new and it was getting its smell onto the product before anything else.

What follows are 3 tips to prevent your dog from scent marking his territory:

1. The first, and perhaps best way, to stop him leaving his mark is the get him the operation. Getting your dog neutered or spayed will reduce the body’s natural chemicals and hormones that get pumped up by sexual heat. Be aware though that this can sometimes bring about changes in your dogs attitude, so talk it over with the vet first. Overall the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

2. Dogs are clean animals by nature and you can turn this to your advantage by just placing his food dish or water bowl next to an area that he may have marked will prevent him from marking that area again.

3. If the above two tips have no effect you might be forced to consider drug therapy. It is a fact that some dogs really overdo this marking thing and the reason is relatively simple they are fearful and have a high stress level. I’ve often seen this is rescured dogs; dogs that were abused in the past or were placed in stressful situations.  In difficult cases like this drugs can prove helpful but as with humans drugs should be a last resort. Before approaching your vet I’ve often found it a good idea to contact local dog trainers they can often work with you to help defeat the habbit.
