If you love your dog then don’t give him chocolate this Easter

Andrew Batty, a surgeon from Ruthland House in Sutton England said: “A small amount of chocolate can cause a problem, particularly dark chocolate as it has a high cocoa content – it is potentially a very poisonous issue. Every Easter and Christmas, we see an increase in the number of cases. If a dog eats dark chocolate, it could start to vomit immediately and, within 12 hours, may have seizures which could be fatal.”

In our experience dog owners do not always realize that chocolate that there is a compound in the cocoa bean that goes to make up chocolate that is fatal to dogs: the compound is called theobromine.

While it may be tempting to give your pet just a little chocolate by way of a treat be warned that even a small amount of chocolate can cause damage to a dog: it can be as simple as an upset stomach, right through to severe vomiting and even death. So don’t do it. Don’t give dogs chocolate!

But all is not lost – if you do want to give your dog a special treat this Easter then visit your pet shot and search for specially made doggie chocolate products that are safe for dogs, or better still buy him a new toy and take him for a nice long walk!
