Dogs And Cold Weather

Posted by admin on January 8th, 2010

It might be the coldest weather in the UK for over thirty years but if you have a dog it still needs looking after and that means some form of exercise. Here are some tips you might like to consider when walking your dog in the snow.

You wrap up well when you go out so why not try and do the same for your pet. If the dog is a small dog like a terrier think about buying them a winter coat. They really will appreciate it. Limit the amount of time you keep your dog out in the cold especially if there are sub-zero temperatures.

Many dogs like the taste of snow and ice and while small amounts of it will do them no harm it is best to try and avoid them eating large amounts of it. Of course other dogs don’t want to venture out at all but they have to, if only for toilet reasons. I would suggest that before taking your dog out you clear a patch of ground so he can do the bussiness. Additionally I would advise you to keep him outside for at least ten minuites in oder that he might get some exercise.

When you arrive back from your walk always wash the dogs paws especially if you have been walking on raods that were recently salted. If salt is allowed to remain on the dogs paw it will irritate and crack them and leave the dogs paw sore and uncomfortable. Your dog will also attempt to lick the offending salt away which could make him sick.

Before you make yourself that hot cup of tea or coffee dry your dog off, snow will have gotten onto his legs and coat and if he is not cleaned up not only will he be uncomfortable he may develop a cold. Now you have your dog looked after and your large mug of tea or coffee sit down, turn on the telly and you and the dog take a well deserved rest.
