Dog Sat Nav
Posted by admin on April 18th, 2009Seeing eye dogs go satellite. A young Welsh scientist, Jason Perkins from the Cardiff Institute for the Blind has invented a revolutionary sat nav that directs guide dogs for blind people.
Speaking about his invention Jason, 34 said that he hoped it would give ‘blind people complete freedom. They can use it to navigate safely to new places. I wanted to create something that would have a live changing effect but would also draw upon the unique skills of the guide dog.
The blind user announces their destination into a sat nav microphone. The vibrating receiver then indicates how to ’steer’ the dog.
One of the dog sat nav testers blind Jane McCann, said ‘I have small children, so it’s difficult to concentrate on the kids and the directions at the same time. This was easy to use and life-enhancing.’
Costing 500 GBP the dog sat nav will be launched this summer. The dog sat nave works by clipping it onto the dog’s harness the machine then vibrates on the left or right side to tell the handler which direction to go in.
