There are several good reasons why the owner of a new puppy should invest in a dog crate. My main reason for recommending a dog crate is that they are an invaluable resource for training your new puppy.
Think about it when a new puppy comes into your home it does not know what boundries are placed upon it and with the large open space of a modern home a dog crate suitable for your puppy can help calm it down and give the owner control over the puppy.
[ad#right-336]Where there are young children about the home then it is almost inevitable that they will encourage the puppy to become overexcited. If you have a dog crate handy then all you have to do is pop the puppy into the crate for a few hours, it will calm it down, help it relax and teach it not to get to excited around children .
Maybe you are going out for the evening and want to ensure that your new puppy doesn’t get up to any mischief again a dog crate is a stress free way for you to leave your home and not worry about your puppy getting into trouble around the home or soiling the floor.
When buying a dog crate it is important to buy an appropiate size one which is based on your dog’s height and width. If you are using the crate as the chief means of housebreaking your new puppy then choosing the correct size of crate is very important. It is for this reason I recommend visiting your local pet shop and buy there rather than buying on line, the owner will be able to offer you good sound advice about various crates and how best to use them. I have found pet shop owners advice invaluable especially when it comes to buying a crate for a dog that is fast growing; you’ll find that the shop owner will often recommend buying an adult crate.
Don’t forget the bedding. Some puppy owners have asked me why their puppies still use the bathroom inside even though the crate is the appropriate size for potty training. In most instances I have found that the bedding was to generous and that it had a tendency to induce duination in dogs. A good tip is to make the bedding not just as comfortable for example try one or two sheets of an old newspaper instead of that nice comfortable blanket!
One last tip. Dog crates are a great way to feed your puppy if he becomes distracted and over-excited. Just put his food into the crate and that will restrict his movements and again will help calm him down. Dogs are clean animals and feeding him in the crate will also encourage him not to use the crate as a tolit as dogs do not normally urinate where they feed.
