Occasionally you may find it necessary to apply eye drops to your dog for the likes of canine conjunctivitis, but as with all medications this should only be done when you have received the advice from a qualified health professional. Here are a few things to consider when applying such drops.
[ad#left-336]Rember that for the dog this is going to be a stressful situation and it may struggle to avoid what is a foreign body going into its eye so it is always a good idea to muzzle your dog.
Remember to clean around the dogs eye with a little tepid water and some cotton wool – bin the cotton wool afterwards. You should first of all clean the outside of the dog’s ey to remove and debris or discharge that might be there, follow this procedure and you reduce the risk of irritation.
As always read the label. Many dogs have to received regular eye treatment.
When you are ready to apply the drops you must restrict its movement. Place your arm under the dog’s neck ending with your hand near the dog’s eye, talk to you dog while doing this in a comforting, gently voice, try your best to put your dog at it’s ease. Ask you vet to demonstrate this technique for you if you are unsure.
With the hand that is restricting your dogs movement gently pry open the dog’s eye. Now using your free hand quickly apply the drops,
Your dog will blink a few times, this is normal and indeed helpful as it helps spread the drops across the surface of the eye. As you will have to complete a course of treatment always offer the dog a treat, play with it and show it plenty of love this will help it to become less stressful when you repeat the dose.
